According to a report from The Chronicle, Arsenal are considering capitalising on Freddie Woodman stalling his contract negotiation at Newcastle.

What’s the story?

After Woodman decided to reject a new deal in the summer, the young custodian was denied the chance to go out on loan for the fifth consecutive season and is currently second choice to Martin Dubravka at St James Park.

The 21-year-old has made six appearances for the England U21s and has been a part of the Three Lions set-up since 2012 with the U16s, reason enough to warrant a starting spot for most clubs but he is currently plying his trade with the Magpies U23 side.

The 6ft 2in shot-stopper won the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup with England and also received the Golden Glove award for his exploits. To put Woodman’s current situation at Newcastle in perspective, Manchester City’s Phil Foden featured in that same World Cup winning side and is currently in rotation despite the wealth of talent that Pep Guardiola has at his disposal.

After seeing his impressive performances in the Scottish Premiership with Aberdeen, in which he kept three clean sheets in five games, Celtic are also interested in Woodman as well as Premier League strugglers Fulham.

Could it happen?

It’s unlikely that Woodman would budge Bernd Leno in the Gunners’ starting line-up right away, but he certainly has the quality and potential to challenge him in the long run when Petr Cech eventually goes.

It wouldn’t take too much for Unai Emery to prise the goalie away from Newcastle as he is valued at just £450k by Transfermarkt, peanuts for a club who spent £71m in the summer. The former Crystal Palace academy player’s current contract runs out in 2020 and Rafa Benitez and co are keen to tie him down for the foreseeable future, but if he continues to reject contract approaches and is denied loan spells then it’s likely that the number 41 will pursue a permanent move to another club.
