I’m sitting here in my University halls with nothing to do except scour the remaining fixtures list, and there’s one thing that keeps going through my mind.
We’re going to stay up. Albeit, in my head, in the most romantic manner; winning against Blackburn on the last day of the season keeping us up whilst simultaneously sending one of our rivals down. Every Wolves fan has to believe, but not all of us genuinely believe it’s doable. There are a few things that are working in our favour at the moment.
The remaining fixtures are as favourable as they could be. The away games left lie at Newcastle, Stoke, Birmingham and Sunderland. Whilst they are all relatively notorious for putting up a good fight on home soil, there is no doubt whatsoever that every one of those games are winnable. We’ve already accumulated 10 points against those four sides this season, so who’s to say we can’t go and achieve the same feat again? Our away form, of course, has been terrible this season, but things can only get better on that front. If we approach those games in the right way, I believe we can pick up some very valuable points.
Fortress Molineux will entertain Everton, Fulham, West Brom & Blackburn. On the flip-side, we’ve only picked up two points against those sides this season, but let’s look at the positives. We were beating Fulham with two minutes to go, and we were 1-0 up at the Hawthorns as we approached the third minute of injury time. It’s been a familiar pattern for us this season. Furthermore, Sir Alex Ferguson – speaking before Wolves ended his side’s ten month unbeaten run earlier in the season – came out and said “I watched them lose 3-0 at Blackburn earlier in the season, and I’ve got no idea how. The keeper made some sensational saves.” What more needs to be said? We’re good enough; we just need to fully focus on the task in hand. Our home form has really picked up in the last six or seven games, and nobody gets out of Molineux with any points easily. Just ask Alex, Roberto, and Carlo.

As you can tell, I’m a bundle of optimism. I genuinely believe we can go out and win every single one of our remaining games, and at the end of the season we’ll kick back and chuckle at how worried we were in the last couple of months of the season. Of course it’s going to be a little more difficult than I’m making it sound, but with the right approach, we can do it. It’s not only our fixtures that leave me with optimism; we seem to have hit form at the right time. We’ve gone three games unbeaten for the first time since August.
Also, Jamie O’Hara looks to be an inspired introduction to our squad following his loan move from Tottenham. He is providing a real energy and desire in midfield, and it seems to be rubbing off on the rest of the squad. He didn’t win nine different Player of the Year awards at Portsmouth last season for nothing. Adam Hammill is putting his name forward for bargain of the season after his £500k move from Barnsley. He consistently terrorises defenders with his no-nonsense attacking style of play, and he’s one of the best crossers of the ball I’ve ever seen in a Wolves shirt.
As well as this, Doyle is finally getting the goals his hard work deserves after his brace against Tottenham recently. Matt Jarvis is once again seemingly back to his best after going slightly off the boil mid-season. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake & Fletcher are doing the job whenever they’re called upon, and maybe the most important of them all; Michael Kightly is fit and raring to go. After completing three games for the reserves, it’s been confirmed that he is fighting for a place on the bench at Villa. Nobody is expecting miracles from him so soon, but just having him back in amongst the first-team squad is going to provide a real buzz.

It’s going to be a tough, long, and emotional battle. But we’ve got the perfect set of players, the best fixtures and with the right desire; we’ll be back in the Premiership next season.
