Sunderland are close to agreeing a £2.5m deal for Panathinaikos winger Charis Mavrias, according to reports from the Daily Mail.
The Black Cats have already been very active in the transfer market this summer, as Paolo Di Canio goes about building a squad capable of avoiding another Premier League relegation dogfight.
He sees the 19-year-old as somebody who can add pace and flair form out wide, and is ready to make his move in the coming days.
Initially the Greek ace was set to move to the Stadium of Light on loan last month, but a series of delays saw the arrangement fall through.
Di Canio is desperate not to miss out on his man, and is willing to instead pay up front to secure his signature.
With Pana’s financial problems a deal is likely to be agreed swiftly.
Despite his young age, Mavrias made four Champions League appearances last term and netted five goals in all competitions.
The teenager is thought of as one of the top emerging talents in his home country, for whom he has already won two international caps.
Meanwhile, Sunderland are also keen to draft in a new left-back, with Paolo De Ceglie or Juventus and QPR’s Armand Traore their top targets.
